Early Reading First and Reading First are federal initiatives focused on establishing centers of excellence in the area of reading. These programs are designed to enhance the reading practices and curriculum in the preschool and early grade school years in an attempt to lower the percentage of children who experience difficulties with reading later on. One of the most interesting aspects of these grant programs is their recognition of the key role that speech-language pathologists play in understanding and strengthening the oral language abilities that form the foundation for literacy.
