The three developmental levels of children’s behavioral responses to common objects which characterize their advancing conceptualization in the early years are described. The article relates verbal development at the three sequential levels for use in evaluation. Examples of behavior patterns at each level are provided and an approach to promote the child’s cognitive response to familiar household objects is suggested.
